Ok, now I’m annoyed: an attempt at helping laid off InfoSec people

As a British person, nothing motivates me quite like getting annoyed by a thing, and I’m extremely annoyed at the moment.

I’m annoyed that so many good, hard working people in our industry (and others, of course) are faced with the anxiety of being laid off and having to scramble to find new employment, through no fault of their own.

I’m especially annoyed that in the United States, this anxiety is compounded in the majority of cases by losing access to healthcare. That’s horrible, and doesn’t seem to befit living in the wealthiest country in the world. Can’t really solve that problem right now.

This week in particular has been a particularly rough week for some folks that I have worked with in the past and can vouch for. I think this has what has tipped me over the edge, personally.

As someone whose general philosophy in life is essentially ‘let’s just help everyone be ok, as we all cling on to our space rock for dear life’, I wish I could just magic up jobs for everyone, but of course that is not possible. So I’ve genuinely been trying to think of ways of helping over the past few weeks. This is what I’ve come up with, it’s probably not perfect, and inside I hope it’s not just a way for me to feel better about things, but instead is genuinely helpful to those looking for InfoSec jobs.

I’ve been hiring for InfoSec roles in the UK and US for ~15 years at this point, and have reviewed hundreds of resumes in that process. I’ve hired for pretty much every role in the typical security team, mostly focused on SaaS security teams.

If I don’t know you, you are job seeking in the US or UK, and would like a hiring managers unfiltered view on your resume/CV, please send a copy to resumereview@securebeing.com. Tell me the types of role you’re applying for and I’ll provide feedback on how I’d modify, or not modify things. I promise to turn these around within 48 hours.

I hope this is a useful thing to do, and if you are job seeking, hang in there and stay strong. It’ll get better. Things always do.
